ADSL data use: Cape Town versus Gauteng

There is a difference in how people in Gauteng, Cape Town, and Durban use the Internet – here are some stats

Capetonians use more ADSL data than their counterparts in Gauteng, while people in Gauteng start using data earlier, and stop later. It is found that subscribers in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal use 6% more data than those in Gauteng. It is  interesting that both East (KwaZulu-Natal) and South (Western Cape) use more data per user on average than in the North (Gauteng).

Time of peak ADSL data use

While we do not see any difference in usage between the different regions, there are different usage patterns when looking at the time of day.

Peak data usage starts at around 08:00 in Johannesburg – around 30 minutes before Cape Town and Durban.

DSL traffic starting to decrease around 30 minutes earlier in Cape Town and Durban (18:00) than in Johannesburg (18:30).

What is particularly interesting is that “Netflix Time” – where residential consumers consume high data volumes – starts earlier in Cape Town and lasts longer than other cities.

So, in short, people in Gauteng work harder, while Capetonians start chilling at home earlier, and for longer.
